Trauma Therapy

When trauma has been experienced, it may seem impossible to move forward, let alone move through what can seem overwhelmingly unsurmountable. The brain may not have adapted to make the person feel safe again. This can perpetuate cycles of feeling stuck in survival mode, in a state of heightened anxiety, and paralysis which both the body and mind can feel trapped in. It is not unusual for the body to remember the inflicted traumas even when the brain momentarily dissociated from what happened during the traumatic event(s).

Trauma informed counselling can help to restore safety, trust, respect and confidence, so the person experiencing the ongoing symptoms of their past traumas, can come to realise that the traumatic events have already been survived even if the memories seem so vivid. The counseling space can offer specialist treatment so the person seeking help, can safely reframe what happened to them, in more adaptive ways, allowing the brain to safely “file” the lived traumatic experience(s) and close the trauma loops. In doing so, the person no longer needs to hold on to maladaptive defense mechanisms that may have helped them cope and survive during or after the traumas but no longer serving them in their present lives.

This type of trauma work requires a secure therapeutic relationship, with unconditional positive regard and understanding from an empathetic, non judgemental, skilled therapist like Neeteesha, trained and experienced in different modalities and trauma therapies. Neeteesha offers a warm, safe space, to allow the person to begin their journey of healing and recovery, no longer feeling isolated and stuck in dealing with their traumas.

Such specialised trauma modalities include:

Mindfulness based and somatic approaches to allow the body to free up the symptoms of lived traumas; EMDR therapy, Post Traumatic Growth Mindset coaching, Trauma focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Attachments and schema therapy to explore maladaptive coping that may have rooted from lived traumas, currently impacting one’s quality of life and choices.

An initial consultation can help open up discussions around what might best suit the individual seeking support. This can be one or more forms of treatments being offered.

EMDR therapy – Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR therapy uses eye movement and other types of bilateral stimulation techniques, whilst taxing the sensory responses and lessening the emotional charge attached to target memories of the lived traumas.

Once desensitised the person receiving treatment can reprocess the once vivid, impactful memory and any associated memories in a more adaptive way, reframing how they might feel and think about themselves when they bring up the image or sensory recollections of the events being processed.

This evidence based therapy is proven to be highly effective, often in a short space of time, with clients undergoing treatment reporting that for the first time since the traumatic occurrence, the image of their traumas seem more faded, less vivid, no longer impacting the ways in which they live their current lives. The preliminary phases of EMDR offers in itself an opportunity to heal, gain more insights and perspectives on one’s own ability to move forward in their lives.
